The Final Leg
We dropped off four empty barges at a dock in Theodore, Alabama, yesterday morning. By tonight, they should be loaded and ready for us to pick them up and take them back west to New Orleans. We have four loads to deliver to Mobile, the final leg of this eastbound run.
This is a series of pictures I took from the time we left Theodore until we were in the Mobile River, six hours later.

Looking west into Theodore harbor just after sunrise
We met boats of all types, both recreational....
A Coast guard patrol boat passed us by
We picked up some hitch-hikers on the way. We have 4 scrap loads in tow. The metal will be melted down and used to make steel plate, which we will take back to New Orleans. Now you'd think...
nah, that would put me out of a job.
McDuffie Coal terminal is the first facility one encounters upon
entering Mobile harbor
McDuffie's dock is long enough to work two ships this size at once, plus several barges on the back side.
Don't know what to make of the Lazy Dolphin here. Cute, though
R2D2's parents scan the horizon for any sign of their offspring
The Mobile Convention Center. Here is where I was relieved by Jerry,
who brought the tow the rest of the way up to Cooper Fleet.

Those seagulls give it perspective.
R2D2's parents...roflmao Now that cracked me up.
@POETIC_ISIS - Perspective and a protective coating.
@C_L_O_G - That is the Judicial Building, and I think it is one ugly edifice; but ugly in a cute way. Those red circles, I have no idea what they symbolize.
I agree with C_L_O_G....that was pretty funny!
I love the colors in the harbor at sunrise.
An interesting viewpoint! l love the 'hitchhikers' and the R2D2's parents shots!
What an incredible career you have!
@doahsdeer - And the sun was shining directly down the channel, something it does only a few days a year.
@slmret - I like to wait until a few hundred gulls are sitting on the barges, then blow the boat's horn. It looks like a cloud when they take off.
@ItsWhatEyeKnow - It does have its perks. I like to call the wheelhouse my four-cornered office.
@MelFamy - hahaha -- sometimes when I'm shooting photos at the beach there are kids who run straight at a large group of gulls sitting on the beach -- I know exactly what you mean about it looking like a cloud!
Man, I always enjoy your pictures !!!
@carolinamuscle - Just wait! One sleepless day when we have no barges in front of us, I will go out on the foredeck and get some shots of dolphins swimming in the bow wave. If I am lucky, they will be doing their underwater ballet, which I hope to capture on a video.
