RETURN TO PITT SPRINGS
The Water Management district here held an open house for the Pitt Springs recreation area, which has been closed for a year and a half now so that 'improvements coiuld be made to Mother nature's work. I give them a 'C' minus.
This was the spring before the shutdown....
...and this is how it looks now, the retaining wall has been removed and native vegetation
has been planted to hold the banks in place.
The trails have been replaced with walkways, as if that will keep me from taking off
into the woods like a scofflaw.
Back at work, I tried to take pictures of a very un-cooperative porpoise
And on the way to work, I spotted this crop of Ringless Honey Mushrooms.
Very few shrooms have a flavor worth mentioning, but these guys are flat-out delicious!
They have a nutty taste, and a slightly chewy texture; an excellent side dish, or sauteed with any meat.

I'm not sure why they took down the retaining wall. It does look more natural, but once it becomes a popular swimming hole again, all that pretty stuff is just going to get trampled. They should know better than to trust people to take care of things like that....look at what happened to all the lakes in our area!
I'm sure the porpoise would have been more cooperative if you had just shared your honey mushrooms with him. Those are pretty mushrooms!
Beautiful photos! Love the porpoise and the mushrooms!
Wonder why mankind and womankind are always trying to improve on nature. ??
HUGS!
Yes, do 'justify' your less than stellar grade, although Joi already gave some hints. From the two photos, I'd give 'em a 'B', esp if I can dance to it on the boardwalks.
Some 'Child's First Book of Fungus' or something I got for turning 6 yrs old kinda gave me the fear of God re: mushrooms. Since then, they all look like demon Fly Anamitas, or whatever the name of the Killer was. Hey, I wuz real little then..
I left out a paragraph:
The walkways are nice, if you never saw the place in all of its unspoiled glory, and were unaware of just how many prodigiously-fruiting blueberry bushes were sacrificed to build these walkways. I am being slightly selfish here; this place was mine alone most of the time. now, there will be people all over the trail, spoiling my peace and quiet, scaring off the wildlife before I can photograph them. But there are other sections of the mighty Econfina River that are still pristine, still relatively untrod, And I will make peace with the changes here at Pitt Spring. It will just take a little time, is all.
The old pond wall looks like vintage CCC work. I don't care that much for the new look, although it is more natural. The wooden walkways look more intrusive, although I guess animals can go under them. I'd never seen chicken-wire barriers on the railings like that before, but I haven't been to many nature parks recently.
It's been awhile since I posted. I agree with you about not liking the trail upgrades. Just another case of our money being spent fixing something that isn't broken. We have far to many bureaucrats setting in offices, dreaming up problems that don't exist so they can justify their unnessesary jobs.
